Early screening for breast cancer for women in Vietnam

Vietnam context: what is the status quo of breast cancer in Vietnam?

Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer among women in many countries around the world, including Vietnam. According to Globocan 2022, breast cancer accounts for the highest proportion of cancers in women in Vietnam, 28.9%, with 24.563 new cases (2020: 21,555 new cases) and is the first leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women.

While one-third of the deaths of these women could have been avoided through timely and appropriate treatment (Analysis from International Agency for Research on cancer, IRAC), breast cancer screening projects are typically conducted for only short periods. Once these projects are completed, regular screening and preventive measures—along with awareness campaigns to promote health check-ups and early detection of breast cancer—are not consistently emphasized. A report summarizing the medical examination and treatment activities over three consecutive years from 2021 to 2023 at the Oncology Center of Hue Central Hospital indicated that the number of breast cancer patients in Thua Thien Hue province (where the project will take place) admitted to the hospital doubled in 2023 compared to 2021. Among the admitted cases, one-third of the patients were diagnosed at stage IV—the stage where there is no longer a chance for a cure. National wide, over 70% of breast cancer cases in Vietnam are diagnosed at an advanced stage, making effective treatment more challenging.

 What our Rotarians can do?

In this initiative, Rotary Club Saigon International (‘RCSI’) focuses on health promotion for early detection, addressing late diagnosis through awareness and early screening. Early detection can significantly improve survival rates and reduce treatment costs. Studies show that prevention and early detection strategies are cost-effective, particularly for women aged 50-59. The project will be taking place in one or two communes (Xã) in Thua Thien Hue province, Vietnam.

Scalability and sustainability

This initiative aligns with Vietnam’s national health strategy, emphasizing early detection and prevention of non-communicable diseases, including cancer. Health promotion and awareness campaigns can be implemented quickly, increasing the number of women seeking screening and early diagnosis. This project is a pilot and will scale up into the 2nd commune or province with a long term vision of having national impact.

What Rotary Club Saigon International is looking for

  • DDF Funding: Major source of donation in the project, aiming to raise around USD 45,000 from one or several DDF.
  • Healthcare Network: Having a network in the healthcare sector, especially in cancer research and experience with similar projects, would be a significant advantage.
  • Long-Term Partnership: Rotary Club Saigon International aims for a long-term partnership to scale up the project in future phases.
